Spoony Plays the Phantasy Star Spinoffs, Part 4: Nei's Adventure

Nei finds herself pursued by a vicious hunter and discovers the secret of her past, as well as a new future.

Spoony Plays the Phantasy Star Spinoffs, Part 3: Huey's Adventure

The Phantasy Star II Text Adventures were a series of short adventure titles originally released in 1990 on a Japanese-exclusive download service called the Sega Game Library.  They later got a physical release as part of a line of Sega CD compilation discs known as the "Sega Games Cans" (so named because the discs were housed in round metal cans) and, more recently, all eight of them have also been released on Phantasy Star Complete Collection, which is part of the Sega Ages 2500 compilation series for the Playstation 2.  None of these games (or compilations thereof) have been officially released outside of Japan, but all of them have since been fan-translated, which is what I am playing for the purpose of these videos.

All of the games follow one of the eight playable characters from Phantasy Star II before the events of the main game, giving a bit more detail on their respective back stories.  Huey/Hugh's follows his attempt to stop a rogue bio-monster at his university.

Spoony Plays Grandia II, Part 2

Attack of the Plot Points!

For the record, I'd like to state that Twitch's Youtube uploader is junk. Took me like 5 attempts to get this video up...

Spoony Plays The Phantasy Star Spinoffs, Part 2: Phantasy Star Adventure

Another Biox-developed spinoff, this time taking the form of an adventure game with some light tabletop RPG elements.  The plot is set in the same era as Phantasy Star II but is otherwise unrelated to its story, following the adventure of an unnamed agent of Paseo as he searches for his kidnapped friend and his stolen invention.  But is it worthy of your time?  Or at the very least, is it not as painful as Gaiden?  Let's find out.

Spoony Plays the Phantasy Star Spinoffs, Part 1: Phantasy Star Gaiden

A not-very-good Japanese exclusive spinoff of the Phantasy Star series, Gaiden is essentially a side-story following the adventures of Alis Landale's daughter on the world of Copto as an evil force threatens it with destruction.

This game was not developed in-house by Sega, but rather loaned out to a company named "Biox" that produced several other ports and handheld spinoffs, probably the best known of which is Mega Man II on the Game Boy.  Whether Gaiden is part of the official series canon is still debated, though Phantasy Star IV's original subtitle was "The Return of Alis", hinting that, if nothing else, it was planned to be part of the series at one point.

Killer7 Target 06: Lion (Endings A and B)

Japan is finished.

The UN makes its move.

Oh, and if you're wondering what Killer8 is, it's essentially a "hard mode" for the game.  Smiles are much deadlier now (enough to kill any character besides Mask or Harman in one hit), have more health and their weak points are invisible.  On the upside, you also get another playable character - young Harman Smith, who has the highest health of any character and is armed with a rapid-fire tommy gun.  However, he cannot be upgraded, which limits his usefulness somewhat.

Completing Killer8 unlocks yet another mode called "Hopper7", which replaces all the Heaven Smiles with "Hoppermen" - men who wear grasshopper masks and die in one hit.  However, only the first mission is playable in this mode.

Spoony Plays Grandia Bonus #3: Tower of Temptation

Grandia's ultimate challenge awaits!

The Savanna is a fairly large and complex area to navigate, so I drew in the path you'll need to follow in order to reach the Tower of Temptation:

You'll have to walk blind through a well-hidden cave in the canyon walls for the last stretch.

Be sure to have plenty of Ultimate, Blue and Gold potions on hand before you go in, because this place is rough!  I would also strongly recommend equipping your entire party with non-elemental weapons, as nearly all of the enemies in here are resistant to elemental damage.

Here's that item I wanted to get but missed in the video:

...It's nothing you'd sorely miss, but it is the second-strongest throwing weapon in the game and does extra damage to demonic enemies (which the Tower has plenty of in its later floors).
